Ian is a Canadian lawyer, called to the Bar of Ontario in 1981, after studying law at the Faculty of Law, University of Toronto.
He has worked in the access to justice field for more than thirty years. Before starting international development work in 2003, Ian worked for more than twenty years for Legal Aid Ontario, Canada’s largest legal aid program.
In 2003, Ian joined the International Initiatives program of the Canadian Bar Association and has worked since then on development programs with a special focus on access to justice and capacity building for the legal profession.
His previous work includes projects and consultancies in southern and eastern Africa, the Caribbean, Bangladesh and China. Ian comes to SAFE from the position of Regional Director of a child-focused project, Strengthening Access to Justice for Children and Youth in East Africa project, which worked to improve legal services and access to justice for children in Kenya, Nairobi and Tanzania.
